It’s Friday night, you’re heading out for some after work drinks and this little dress is perfect to take you from the office, to a bar.

A few weeks ago, my brother-in-law was getting married in Dublin and make no mistake, this was to be a ‘fancy’ affair! Nearly 200 guests were decamping to gorgeous Ireland, to see the happy happy couple take their vows and partake in a mean party thereafter.
So, what’s a girl to wear to such a do? As usual I left my dress shopping way too late and as usual, the amazing ASOS came to my rescue.
After several hours, ok, days, scouring ASOS.com, with a customary glance at Top Shop and Very.co.uk, I found it, THE DRESS. Now I’m normally a casual kinda gal, but when I’m going to an event, function or wedding, I like to girly it up a bit and this dress practically jumped off the screen and screamed girly in my face.
Bold in print, but modest in it’s style, this gorgeous Fallen Star Floral Maxi was everything! Unfortunately my size wasn’t in stock, but fear not, after tweeting my distain, within minutes the helpful peeps at ASOS had replied and suggested I added it to my favourites list and told me to keep checking back for re-stocking and within a few days there it was!
When the dress arrived it was WAY too long; not just, stick on some heels and deal with it long, but I’m going to need to grow half a foot long. Step in seamstress extraordinare Alison, who for a bargain £8, took the hem up a good few inches. So, dress altered and bags packed, we boarded our Ryanair flight to sunny Dublin and had the most amazing weekend.
The dress was £45 (and would appear to be no longer in stock), but the weekend in Dublin…. way too expensive to say! However, it was worth it and I felt a million bucks in THAT dress.
We all know the staples of any wardrobe are your go to basics, classic pieces you can wear daily/nightly, dress down/up and generally form the base of your look. Here are my absolute essential, basic items, I couldn’t live without in my wardrobe and as you can see, they don’t have to break the bank!
The Skinny Jean
This pair, which I own, are from Warehouse; were £45, purchased on sale for £25.
I LOVE these jeans. Warehouse jeans are a first for me, I usually buy all my jeans from Top Shop, but I tried these on, as they were on sale and they are an amazing fit. Flattering and comfy and I adore the (on-trend) zip detail pockets. I did have to go up a size, Warehouse seem to make their clothes super small, so don’t be disheartened if your usual size is a bit on the neat size in there.
The White Tee
White Tee, £6 from H&M.
I have TONS of white Tee’s and they are mostly from H&M. I find they are really affordable and a nice fit. I like my white T to be a bit baggy, not too tight and one that hangs past my belly! These are perfect.
This blazer is £48 from Top Shop and I have one very similar to it that I, surprise surprise, found in the sale for £20 last year. I have three black blazers – one fitted and ‘suit’ like for work, one like this that I wear out or casual and the third, a loose tuxedo style with 3/4 length sleeves, I wear to work or for going out.
The Ballet Pump
These nude ballet pumps are £16 from Top Shop and I am now on my second pair after wearing the first to a slow death! I’m crazy about these little pumps. Obviously a shoe for the drier/warmer weather, but all spring/summer I wear mine with skinny jeans, skirts, dresses, just about everything really. They are comfortable and cute as a button!
White Cons, from well, just about anywhere! My most recent pair were £45 from Office and you’ll find that price is pretty standard across the board. I LIVE in my cons; you literally have to peel them off me these days, apart from these wet winter months when I’m in my biker boots, but with the cons, I wear them smart to work with jeans and a blazer, casual at the weekend and even going out. I just can’t see past these shoes, they go with EVERYTHING!
I got this bag this year with some birthday vouchers for Top Shop – it was £40 and I have used it everyday since I got it. It’s got a hint of Victoria Beckham about it, maybe a bit of McQueen, that nice structured tote that you can fit a ton of stuff in. It’s classic, elegant and I think it’s a real find.
I have a necklace, almost identical to this one pictured, that I got in H&M for £2!!! An absolute steal and I wear it nearly everyday. It’s pretty, petite and goes with almost everything. A nice little basic to brighten my neckline.
These are my staples, absolute no negociating, I must have, staples. Adding all the other bits that transform them into a different outfit everyday….that’s the fun part…
On a day off from work, I mostly like to dress pretty casual. I enjoy wearing a dress to work now and again and I’m embracing my new found love of blouses, however on a wet, cold Saturday in January, I’m happiest in my trusty Top Shop skinnies, Top Shop Biker Boots and Miss Selfridge leather jacket.
The hoodie is Top Shop and the grey top is Zara.
Comfy, warm and ideal for trudging round a wet city centre hunting for more bargains in the sales! Which, by the way I did find…. More on that soon!
Date night with the boyfriend. You’ve mentally run through your wardrobe, decided what you’re going to wear, done your preening, primping and making yourself purty, then, the outfit goes on and you hate it! Nothing sits right, you don’t feel comfortable and you’re back to the drawing board!
Well that was me last night, the pre planned outfit went out the window and last minute I was throwing on my go to outfit, Top Shop skinny jeans, my new Top Shop desert ankle boots (another sale purchase £62 down to £32) and a Top Shop vest from about 3 years ago!
Simple, comfy and perfect for dinner with the other half. I also threw on a wee Top Shop denim jacket to keep warm!
So the key to a good date night outfit; you must feel good or you’re not going to relax and enjoy your night! So don’t be scared to through your planned look out the window and go with your last minute option, it may be the best!
Oh and can you tell I like Top Shop….
I always say style costs nothing and for me the sales have historically yielded some fantastic bargains, I’ll share my favourite finds over the next few days, starting with my favourite today’s Top Shop shirt.
I’ve been looking for a check shirt and found this take on the classic check, with a mixed print floral body and check arms. It practically jumped off the rails at me! Reduced from £38 to £18 it’s an absolute bargain. I’ve teamed it today with Top Shop skinny jeans and my trusty old Kate Moss for Top Shop knee high boots.
So, what does ones wear to a sweaty rock gig I found myself asking the other night? I was off to see Queens Of The Stoneage and knew I would be in the middle of a packed crowd of thousands, so my trusty skull vest was dug out, teamed with the ever trusty Top Shop skinny jeans and comfy wedges (3 inches to help me see).
I wish I could remember where I got this vest; it’s done me proud over the years, but I honestly can’t think where I bought the thing! I do remember it was cheap though, around £12.
As I always say, style, costs nothing 🙂
